Recently this year my
wife and I was walking a canal shoreline in Southwest
Florida fishing with 8 lb test line and light tackle when I
caught a huge Largemouth Bass that I'm sure was more than
15+ lbs. The state record on all tackle is 18 lbs. It took
both of my hand in her huge mouth and most of my strength to
lift her out of the water and over the canal wall of 3 feet
with my wife holding onto my feet as I lay on the ground and
reached over the seawall to retrieve her. She was full of
row and nesting so I didn't have the heart to possibly harm
her and her offspring by searching for a certified weighing
station. We held her a few seconds and admired her beauty
and gently put her back on her way. I always advocate and
practice catch and release fishing. Let's leave something
for the kids to enjoy. I have been back to the same
spot on two different occasions now with large top water
lures and she has blown my plugs completely out of the
water, so I know she's still there for me to enjoy again.

Anyway, back to the Guapote. Carefully wrestling
the big Guapote to the shore I pulled it up on the grass
and eventually placed it on the dock alongside my
lightweight spinning outfit and took the below picture. I
always carry my Olympus Stylus 1050 SW 10- mega pixel
waterproof camera on my belt when I'm fishing. My wife
was supposed to go fishing with me that morning but stayed
in the lodge as she was not feeling well. I tied the Guapote
to the dock with a piece of electrical wire I found so I
could go back to the lodge and return with her to take more
photos with me holding my prize. When we returned to the
dock we saw a huge Costa Rican Alligator Turtle on the
surface near the dock. This was the biggest turtle I have
ever seen, even huge saltwater turtles. My heart sank as I
pulled the Guapote from the water to
find the Alligator Turtle had already eaten over half the
fish. My wife was so sad that she had not been able to
accompany me that morning to take photos of me holding the
fish. We returned to Monica & Willy's restaurant and my wife
told them the fish tale. They roared out laughing, but I was
really upset at loosing my chance of a photo of me holding
the Big Guapote fish and not being able to release it back
into water. Monica persuaded me to take this
opportunity to write a story and post it on my website as
the story was very funny and she thought everyone would
enjoy hearing the details. So now you know my Big Guapote
Fishing Tale.
That night we were at a local restaurant having a
pizza and several local folks came over to me and ask to
hear about my Big Guapote Fishing Tale. Its a small Costa
Rican town and news travels fast. We were at Moya's, next
door to the local Nuevo Arenal, Costa Rica Guapote Bar where
"according to the locals" one of the largest Guapote Rainbow Bass ever caught is
mounted and hanging on the wall.
 The fish was beautiful to
look at, but sadly represents the plight of the Guapote
faced with spear fishing and the catch and release method
of big Guapote not being practice. I estimated my fish at 23
1/2 inches based on the measurement of the rod pictured
below. I have no idea of the weight and I'm still on my
quest for a Big Guapote Rainbow Bass for my website and a
light tackle IGFA World Record Guapote. In the
meantime, I'm using the one below.
Since the fish was killed by the predator turtle,
and still fresh, Monica and Willy wanted to prepare the
remainder of the fish with some Costa Rica Rice and Beans.
We stopped in for dinner the next night and they said that
they really enjoyed the fish. It was very tender and
tasted excellent. This is a situation where one Man's
disappointment leads to another Man's and Turtle's full
stomach.
